La Fourmi was established in the early 1990s and was the first supermarket chain to open in Bucharest, Romania. The 14 stores with total sales of €18m in 2005, are located in residential areas in Bucharest and have pioneered and developed over the years a standard for convenience shopping and high quality product range in fresh and imported merchandise targeting consumers of above average income. Delhaize Group the Belgian international food retailer acquired La Fourmi in 2009, through its fully-owned subsidiary Mega Image.
